Operations is the hardest function to write a job description for, because good work here is invisible — when it is running, nobody mentions it. The usual result is a vague brief that attracts generalists and selects for nothing.

Shift design is an operations decision with legal weight

In Brazil, how you structure shifts is not only a capacity question. Night work carries a statutory premium, activities exposed to unhealthy or hazardous conditions carry their own additional payments, and specific rota patterns are governed by law and by collective agreements.

That makes capacity planning a role with cost consequences a foreign parent will not see in the headcount model. An operations planner who understands this produces rosters that are both staffable and affordable; one applying a model from another country produces neither.

What the roles cover

Planning balances capacity against demand. Process and continuous improvement removes waste and rework — where the gains that do not require new headcount live. Service operations sustains recurring customer contact. Field service coordinates work performed outside, with the scheduling and travel complexity that brings.

Field service deserves particular attention in Brazil. Distances are large, urban traffic is heavy, and a technician's realistic daily coverage differs sharply from equivalent planning assumptions in a smaller country.

How to assess

The core competence is deciding quickly with incomplete information, and knowing which variable to sacrifice — time, cost or scope, deliberately and one at a time. Assess with situations rather than concepts.

Describe a day the operation did not close. People who were there know when they realised, what they prioritised and what they let drop — and whether it was the right call.

Which process did you change, and how did you know it improved? Continuous improvement certifications appear frequently on operations CVs, and the gap between holding one and having run a project with measured results is wide. Ask for the problem, the measurement before, the change and the measurement after. Follow-up continues for 90 days, where the early signal is simply where the person has been spending their time.
