Companies deciding to hire in Latin America are rarely choosing a country. They are solving three things at once: working hours that allow real overlap, people who work comfortably in English, and an employment arrangement that does not create liability later. The country tends to follow from those three.

Working hours are the reason most teams start here

Brazil's business day covers most of a US working day. That means live meetings rather than handoffs, and no one working nights to attend them — which is the practical difference between a distributed team and an offshore vendor relationship.

It is also the largest talent market in the region, with established technical education and a volume of professionals no neighbouring country matches. The honest counterpart: Brazil also has the region's most detailed labour legislation, and that shows up in cost and contract design.

Working English is not CV English

This is where post-hire frustration most often comes from. Many Brazilian professionals read and write English comfortably and slow down in live conversation — irrelevant in an asynchronous team, decisive in a meeting-driven one.

So language is assessed in the format the person will actually work in, not by a self-declared level on a CV. Twenty minutes discussing a technical problem measures more than any certificate.

Be explicit about which you need. A team that runs on written updates can hire from a much larger pool than one that runs on calls, and saying so early widens the shortlist rather than narrowing it.

Decide the employment model before the first offer

Hiring in Brazil happens under different arrangements — CLT, the statutory employment regime, and contracting through the individual's own company (PJ), common in technology. They differ in cost, benefits and obligations, and where the relationship functions as employment a contractor arrangement can be challenged and reclassified.

You can also hire through a local registered employer without incorporating an entity. Each route carries different consequences, and the choice belongs with Brazilian counsel before the first offer — not after the tenth hire.

Total employer cost under CLT sits meaningfully above base salary, because of mandatory entitlements. Comparing countries on gross salary alone produces the wrong answer.

Where the talent is, by function

Engineering and product is the most sought and the most contested: senior Brazilian engineers are already hired directly by companies abroad and paid in hard currency, which sets the reference band. Competing on money alone is a fight on the other side's terms.

Finance follows, with a caveat: people who understand Brazilian statutory and tax obligations are scarce and not substitutable with a generalist. Customer operations benefit most directly from the timezone. Leadership requires confidential search.

Scope, stated plainly

HProjekt operates from Brazil, and that is where the depth is — the market map, the network and the track record. Searches elsewhere in the region are run from here, and we say so rather than implying offices across a continent.

The process is the same five stages as any other search, with two additions: language assessed in the real working format, and an explicit alignment on employment model and total cost before any offer — which is where international hiring most often falls apart. Follow-up continues for 90 days, where the signal in a distributed team is not delivery but whether the person has started disagreeing in meetings.
