Candidates registered

Engineering is a regulated profession in Brazil, which changes the order of screening. Before assessing experience, you confirm the person may legally perform the activity — and, for many roles, that they can take formal technical responsibility for it.

Council registration and technical responsibility

Practising engineering requires registration with the CREA, the regional professional council. Registration is at state level and must be active and in good standing — a status that changes over time, sometimes for administrative reasons the professional has not tracked.

There is a second layer that matters for technical roles: the ART, a technical responsibility filing that formally ties a qualified professional to a work or service. Where the role involves signing for design, execution or inspection, this stops being administrative detail and becomes the substance of what you are hiring.

A degree obtained abroad does not by itself permit practice here — foreign qualifications go through a recognition process before council registration is possible. If your plan involves relocating engineers into Brazil, treat that as a project timeline of its own and confirm current requirements with Brazilian counsel.

Specialisations have defined boundaries

Mechanical, electrical, civil, production, chemical and safety engineering solve different problems, and each carries professional attributions with limits set by the council. A job description written around the degree rather than the activity produces candidates who are technically qualified and functionally wrong.

Within each discipline the distinctions matter more than the diploma. In maintenance, industrial electrical work and automation are different routines. In production, continuous improvement experience does not imply production planning experience.

Assessment, and plant access

Which project did you sign for, and what went wrong on it? An engineer who has taken technical responsibility has a story with consequences attached. Someone who merely participated describes the project without a decision of their own inside it.

Which assumption in your calculation proved wrong in the field? It separates people who were present during execution from people who stayed in the office, and the answer is usually too specific to invent.

For plant-based roles, the same mandatory safety certifications that apply to operational staff apply here — training tied to activity type, with expiry dates, that gates access to the area. Verify at screening. Follow-up continues for 90 days, where the most common early mismatch is scope: project work expected, maintenance routine found, or the reverse.
