Brazil has become a common place to build engineering capacity: a large developer population, most of the working day shared with North America, and no need to staff a night shift to get overlap. What surprises companies is not the supply of engineers — it is how competitive the senior end of the market has become.

You are competing with dollar-denominated remote work

Senior Brazilian engineers and technical leaders are routinely hired directly by companies abroad, paid in foreign currency, working remotely. That is now the reference point for anyone you approach at that level, and a package benchmarked only against local employers will read as a step down.

It also changes what persuades. Candidates with that alternative rarely move for money alone — they move for scope, for ownership of a real product decision, and for a reporting line that puts technology in the room where choices get made.

CLT or PJ: a question you must answer before the offer

Brazilian tech has a widespread practice of contracting individuals through their own company (PJ) rather than under CLT, the statutory employment regime. The arrangements differ substantially in cost, in benefits and in the obligations they create.

Where the working relationship in practice has the features of employment, a contractor arrangement can be challenged and reclassified, with retroactive consequences for the employer. This is a decision to take with Brazilian counsel before the offer is made, not after — and candidates will ask, because it affects them directly.

Which archetype the role needs

Hands-on. Still builds. Right while the product is being discovered and the team fits in one room.

Engineering leader. Builds the organisation: team structure, delivery process, hiring, career paths. Right when the problem has moved from what to build to predictability and retention.

Platform and strategy. Owns long-term architecture, security, data and vendor relationships. Right when technology has become a company-wide risk, not only a team's concern.

For a foreign parent there is a fourth consideration: whether this person leads autonomously or acts as the local counterpart to a technical organisation abroad. Both work. Describing one and hiring for the other does not.

Assessment and seniority calibration

Titles do not map cleanly between markets, and a "senior" label carries different weight from company to company here. Assessment therefore runs on decisions the person actually made: an architecture choice, what it traded away, and what followed. That travels across markets in a way a title does not.

English matters at this level, because the role sits between a Brazilian team and a headquarters that does not speak Portuguese. Follow-up continues for 90 days after the start date, through the first architecture and roadmap review — which is when the gap between what was described and what exists becomes visible.
